Call for a Dual degree PhD Student (Carnegie Mellon University – Universidade da Madeira) under the “AHA: Augmented Human Assistance” project (CMUP-ERI/HCI/0046/2013)
The “AHA: Augmented Human
Assistance” project (CMUP-ERI/HCI/0046/2013) financed by the FCT (Portuguese
Foundation for Science and Technology) under the Carnegie Mellon | Portugal
Entrepreneurial Research Initiative 2013 program (CMU|Pt ERI) is looking for a
dual degree PhD student (Carnegie Mellon University – Universidade da Madeira).
Scientific areas: Human Computer Interaction / computer science / electronic and computer engineering
Admission requirements:
The main task for the accepted candidate will be to conduct research towards his/her PhD in the areas of physiological computing and recommender systems for health. The ideal candidate would be a
computer scientist, biomedical, electronic or tele-communications engineer or a
closely related discipline with background in one or more of the following
fields: Signal processing, Machine learning, Human Computer Interaction.
Additionally, experience with physiological data, ICT for health or the use of
depth sensors will be a plus.
Applicants should fulfill the
following requirements:
- MSc degree or equivalent in computer science, electric, electronic or tele-communications engineering or other relevant disciplines for research PhD project;
- Strong oral and written English communication skills, people skills, the ability to work independently as well as a team member and taking the initiative and being proactive;
- Fulfill the requirements of the Dual Degree Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at CMU (http://www.cmuportugal.org/tiercontent.aspx?id=110).
Legislation and regulations: The scholarships are directed to applicants
under the current conditions established on the FCT regulations (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/) and Research Grant Holder Statute.
Work place: The
candidate is expected to complete the degree within 5 years and spend 1 year
(M-ITI) + 2 years (CMU) + 2 years (M-ITI). The work will be conducted in close
collaboration with AHA Project partners and end users, under the supervision of
Prof. Sergi Bermúdez i Badia (http://neurorehabilitation.m-iti.org), Prof. Dan Siewiorek and Prof. Asim Smailagic
(http://www.cmu.edu/qolt/People/).
Scholarship length: The scholarship will have an expected duration of 5 years with an
expected start in January 2015.
Monthly stipend: While in Portugal, the student will receive a stipend of approx.
980€/month and while in USA approx. 2300 USD/month as determined by the FCT
regulations (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Voluntary Social
Security (SSV) and accidents insurance are included.
